Subject: Quake's Palette

I've started doing textures for whatever Quake projects I embark on, and
I'm wondering if anybody knows if Quake's palette is changeable or not. In DOOM,
changing the palette required changing all 10-14 playpal/colormap entries. Is
this so with Quake? I've heard horror stories that Quake's palette is hardcoded.
If this is the wrong place to ask this, somebody private email me where this
SHOULD be asked.
