Subject: Is there a Quake Client-Server Protocol Spec

Has someone developed a specification of the quake client-server
protocol? I see lots of information in the archives of this list and
elsewhere about Quake's graphics algorithms and file formats and data
structures, but very little about its networking. My own interest is
in networking.
I saw some old information about the server source code being released,
but then a few weeks ago John Carmack supposedly said "I have gotten a
little more reticent about releasing object code and some C code just
from a control point of view," talking about the server, I think.
I apologize in advance if I've missed some obvious source, and will
summarize any substantial results to the list.
