Quake III: Arena has a new plan designed to harness the power of the Quake II system but without alienating amateur tinkerers. Lead programmer John Carmack originally investigated the use of cross-platform programming language 'Java' but instead decided to build in a small 'ANSI C' compiler into the game. ANSI C is the most basic, standard version of the C programming language and forms the basis of more complex variants. In the future, Quake III: Arena mods will be small datafiles containing ANSI C source code.
