************************************************************************** * ART OF THE KILL * * Red Flag Training Sortie Descriptions * ************************************************************************** This text file provides descriptions for Red Flag missions that illustrate points in ART OF THE KILL. Use these Red Flag missions to practice offensive, defensive and head-on BFM. Copy all of these files to your FALCON3 or MIG29 directory. To load the mission, go to Red Flag, select the mission and then click on the LOAD button. If you load the missions from MiG-29, then the role and description of that particular mission will be reversed. For example, if you load "OFFBFM1" from MiG-29, you will have an F-16 at the stern of your MiG-29. The missions listing MiG-19s and MiG-23s are redundant since MiG-19s and MiG-23s will be replaced by MiG-29s. OFFENSIVE BFM ------------- * "OFFBFM1" F-16 one mile at the stern of MiG-29. Co-airspeed at 450 KCAS. Co-altitude: 8,000' AGL. Weapons: guns. Illustrates inside bandit's turn circle. * "OFFBFM2" F-16 two miles at the stern of MiG-29. Co-airspeed 450 KCAS. Co-altitude: 8,000' AGL. Weapons: guns. Illustrates outside bandit's turn circle. * "OFFBFM3" F-16 one mile at the stern of MiG-29 as in "OFFBFM1" but at 300 KCAS. Weapons: guns. Illustrates how airspeed affects turn circles. * "OFFBFM4" F-16 two miles at the stern of MiG-29 as in "OFFBFM2" but at 300 KCAS. Weapons: guns. Illustrates how airspeed affects turn circles. * "OFFBFM5" Similar to "OFFBFM1" but with a MiG-23 as the bandit instead of a MiG-29. Shows how the turning capabilities of different aircraft place you inside or outside their turn circle. At one mile, the F-16 is well within the MiG-23's turn circle. * "OFFBFM6" Similar to "OFFBFM2" but with a MiG-23 as the bandit instead of a MiG-29. At two miles, the F-16 is within or near the MiG-23's turn circle. The Flogger cannot come around as far as the MiG-29 could for a front quarter pass. DEFENSIVE BFM ------------- * "DEFBFM1" MiG-29 one mile at the stern of an F-16. Co-speed 450 KCAS. Co-altitude: 8,000' AGL. Weapons: guns. Illustrates bandit inside your turn circle. * "DEFBFM2" MiG-29 two miles at the stern of an F-16. Co-speed 450 KCAS. Co-altitude: 8,000'AGL. Weapons: guns. Illustrates bandit outside your turn circle. * "DEFBFM3" Same as "DEFBFM1" except both aircraft are at 300 KCAS. * "DEFBFM4" Same as "DEFBFM2" except both aircraft are at 300 KCAS. * "DEFBFM5" Same as "DEFBFM3" except MiG-29 is replaced by MiG-23. * "DEFBFM6" Same as "DEFBFM4" except MiG-29 is replaced by MiG-23. HEAD-ON BFM ----------- * "HEADBFM1" F-16 heading 0 degrees. MiG-29 heading 180 degrees. Head-on setup at three miles separation. Co-speed at 450 KCAS. Co-altitude: 8,000' AGL. Weapons: guns, AIM-9M. * "HEADBFM2" Line abreast setup. F-16 heading 0 degrees. MiG-29 heading 0 degrees. Co-speed at 450 KCAS. Co-altitude: 8,000' AGL. Weapons: guns, AIM-9M. * "HEADBFM3" Same as "HEADBFM1" except MiG-29 is replaced with MiG-19. * "HEADBFM4" Same as "HEADBFM1" except MiG-29 is replaced with MiG-23. * "HEADBFM5" Similar to "HEADBFM1" except vertical separation is 5,000'. (F-16 has positional advantage.) * "HEADBFM6" Similar to "HEADBFM1" except vertical separation is 5,000'. (MiG-29 has positional advantage.) * "HEADBFM7" Similar to "HEADBFM1" except MiG-29 heading 225 degrees. 135 degrees aspect on F-16 at one mile. F-16's setup remains the same. * "HEADBFM8" Similar to "HEADBFM1" except MiG-29 heading 270 degrees. 90 degrees aspect on F-16 at one mile. F-16's setup remains the same. Illustrates a high heading crossing angle on initial pass.
