LOVE@MANADON-ENGINEERING-COLLEGE.AC AOTP/SVGA-AW - Request for Opinions "Pete Williams" Subject: Re:TANK and M1 Tank Platoon M1 Tank Platoon has been re-released by a company called Kixx (a subsidiary of Microprose, as far as I know) at a bargain basement price in the U.K. For 15 pounds you get the full manual (same as the one for the C64, minus the nice colour art work on the cover) and one HD disk !! I don't know if it's me, but has anyone noticed that the computer gun-site now nolonger tracks any tanks that you're locked onto !! Spacebar now merely updates the range-finder ! Does anyone know if Red-Storm-Rising is available for the PC, and if so what are the differences between the CD-ROM & disk versions (apart from the media =:-) ) ? [ Well, I know that it's available for the PC, but that's about it... -Jeff ] ------------------------------- From: Robear Subject: Tornado weirdness I had an odd thing happen. I tried a training mission (jp233) with no damage set and enemies turned on. As I egressed, the local CAP picked me up and swooped in. I went to 650 knots or so, and 200' AGL. I noticed fire after a bit and went to the outside view. The pursuing plane was 1/8 mile or so behind me, also at 200', and continuously barrel-rolling around my center axis! This continued for quite a while as we zipped over hill and around dale. I haven't encountered a plane in real combat mode yet, through thoroughly paranoid use of the flight planner. Anyone seen this behavior? I think the wingman collision stuff will turn out to be like F3's helicopters - persistant, annoying, but not enough to get me to drop the game :-). David Pipes ------------------------------- From: sean.kerns@sdrc.com (sean kerns) Subject: Re: Aces of the Pacific So, any Pacific air war aces out there? I'm also on the Falcon list, and I agree it's a much more sophisticated sim, but there's something about the sound of digitized pistone engines, having to lock onto your own targets, and the satisfying thunk of digitized .50 machine guns. Jet fighters will never have that personal aspect. Anybody have any really good missions they want to share, or VCR missions they want to trade? Sean sean.kerns@sdrc.com (Snake) ------------------------------- From: LOVE@MANADON-ENGINEERING-COLLEGE.AC.UK Subject: Tornado weapon views.....great! Hi, I just bought Tornado a few days ago, and have spent a few hours going through the manual learning all those keys! I am very impressed with the quality of the sim so far...much better at low level and ground attack than Falcon 3. However, the best feature has to be the weapon view [V], especially in a loft attack and JP233 run...just awesome! My main problem is knowing what to do after releasing weapons...I want to see if I hit the target, and stop the plane from crashing. At the moment I approach under autopilot, switch to manual just before I start the pull-up to loft the bombs and then release. I switch to weapon view, and for the sake of nothing else to do, hit F7 for the plane to recover autopilot track. From my external view, I see the plane heading straight over the target just before the bombs impact. Hmmm...not too smart! I suppose I should just resist the temptation to assess bomb damage, and just wait to the debrief to check on my performance! BTW the ADV behaves like a pig because it was designed to counter the old Soviet threat to the UK - high flying Backfire bombers and Bear recon aircraft....it was not thought of as a low-level, fast turning dogfighting machine! -Tris Love love@manadon.ac.uk tlove@cix.clink.co.uk 100023.2613@compuserve.com ------------------------------- From: "Pete Williams" Subject: AOTP/SVGA-AW - Request for Opinions I'm not able to purchase every new sim that comes out - don't have either the money or the time to learn and play them all. I have been working with F3 for the past 4-6 months, and enjoy the complexities and challenges of the game a lot. However, before that I had been playing CYAC, and I miss the slower speed, close in action that the prop fighters can give you (you occasionally get this in F3, but much more rarely). Having always been interested in Naval aviation, AOTP has somehow fascinated me. I'd like to hear what other people think of it. The other option for me seems to be SVGA Air Warrior. The main problem I see there is how not to end up with a very expensive addiction - my understanding is that the game is basically a front end to the GENIE head to head arena. I do appreciate the fact that the aerodynamics are supposed to be very faithful - that's something I absolutely consider critical. I know other F3 guys (Jim ?) having been doing SVGA-AW lately, and I'd like to get some impressions from them. Are the stand alone features any good, or am I just buying my first heroin shot? Thanks; Pete Williams ------------------------------- From: MORGAN@WVUGEO.WVNET.EDU Subject: TWI Symbols >The manual states that IR missiles will show up on the RWR as a red plus >while Radar homing missiles will show up as an orange. >I've NEVER seen an orange plus at all, although I KNOW that SAM sites fire >radar homing missiles--I can evade them through the combination of ECM, chaff >(lots!) and manuevering (HARD!). >Anybody know whether this is a bug or not? I have seen orange + desginating incoming missiles on my TWI, usually they come from enemy planes. But as you say, I don't recall seeing them come from ground based SAM's. It might just be that the manual and programers switched them (the colors) as I would think the heat seekers (red????) would be more likely to come from an enemy plane. Stay Low!
