Although I love this "look & feel" I have never seen any software eat a computer up like this one. FS5 has CPU cycles for breakfast. I am running a 486-33, Speedstar24X (ISA), 8 meg ram, etc. I realize this was a marginal machine for FS5. So, I tried it on a Micron 486-66(DX2) , Diam. Viper, 16 meg, etc. and it just wasn't much better. My question is this: Has anyone flown FS5...with all details on (VGA or SVGA) on a faster machine like a Pentium or dual Pentium and had great results? I would like to know if anything can run this software "smoothly" when the details and other items are maxed-out. I figure that it was written on some workstation and ported down to the PC (X86 platform). OK Bill Gates..what machine are you using!? Oh, that's right Bill is married now, he doesn't have time to fly. ;-) John "Sirpo" Hiett hiett@caer.uky.edu INN=89726 check tires! ------------------------------- From: lmbain@netcom.com (Larry Bain) Subject: SimNet t [ an exract from c.s.i.pc.games.flight-sims -larry] gary cooper (cooper@access.digex.net) wrote: > amateur@world.std.com (Stephen L Stclair) writes: > >I saw a reference to SimNet recently--what is it and how can I get on? > > > > the only simnet I know of is the military one - joining the Army > would be a good way. :> In addition to the simnet used by the U.S. Military for training there is a PC BBS based SimNet for PC Simulator/Games enthusiasts. BBS nodes of the PC SimNet carry message bases and file areas for many of the popular Flight-Sims and Flight Sim accessories (i.e. Joysticks etc). All of the nodes within the PC SimNet fan out their message bases and files to each other so all users are in contact through the 'net'. Currently small, the PC SimNet is growing rapidly. Below are some of the BBS nodes that I'm aware of. PC SimNet provides an alternative for sim enthusiasts who don't have internet access. Local BBS nodes are also excellent forums for supporting local flight sim clubs as has been demonstrated by many of the xxx TFW clubs (510th, 714th, 817th, etc). PC SimNet has had sporadic connectivity with the USENET but the reliability hasn't been very good until just recently. Hopefully, those problems are all in the past. If you have a local/favorite BBS that may be a good candidate for becoming a SimNet node, have the SysOp contact the Trade Center SysOp (below). I don't believe that there are any fees or licenses involved in becoming a SimNet node. (I have nothing to do with SimNet other than as a happy user of the node on the Fast Tracks BBS).
