Anybody noticing that their plane 'drifts' to left or right? Mine seems to constantly drift to the left. Thought it might be faulty rudder calibration, but I've re-done it several times and the problems persist. 2. Is anyone listening to the LSO? It seeems to me that although he intends well, his advice doesn't always match reality. In particular, glideslope adjustments using power appear to be difficult/impossible. I am modulating my sinkrate using elevators, which while not proper practice, seems to work. I am using the CLS system as displayed in the top MFD. My best landings (4.0) have come in spite of wave-offs; the LSO seems to like low approaches that would require a good deal of speed over the ramp, I like coming in a little higher with lower airspeeds of maybe 140-145 kias. 3. Is there any way to get a *little* additional info on your mission? Flying esort for the B52's left me guessing where they were headed; is there any way to figure this out from the info you are given? Again, I wish there were a way to see the message buffer - I never got a 'return to carrier' message (or if i did, I missed it). About 2 hours into the flight my fuel was getting low so I RTB'd on my own. There are two ways that I know of. If you put your wingman in combat spread formation, he will engage targets at will. For BVR attacks, he will remain in formation at your side as he launches missiles. I'm not sure what happens when you get into a furball. If you tell your wingman to go tactical, you will release him to hunt completely on his own. Apparently, your wingman sometimes starts out the mission in this state (you'll notice he won't form up on you and occasionally you'll get "going hot" and "going cold" messages as he turns his radar on and off). If you don't want this, give an order to get into some formation or another. I've never come close to running out of fuel, and I usually afterburn it all the way up to 30-35K' at the start of a mission. If you use your afterburners sparingly, you shouldn't have fuel problems. >In F3, there is >a *big* premium for flying high - don't remember the exact numbers but >something like double the fuel economy at 20K vs. 5K. Perhaps the manual said so, but tests done by Dave Masten proved that lower altitudes gave greater range in hi-fi. Maybe this was fixed at some point but I doubt it. F15III, the precursor to FD, did take into account altitude when calculating fuel usage at a given throttle setting (Hornet: NSF does this too but the effect is much smaller), but I can't tell if FD does or not. That effect is secondary anyway--the real benefit of flying high is that you can go faster with the same thrust because there's less air resistance. This is definitely modeled in FD. Just remember to keep your speed at a moderate level (AOA near zero). If you have to turn more than a little bit, use your afterburners briefly to maintain speed. If you let your speed drop too low, I think you will reach an equilibrium speed that is much lower (and gives you a sizable AOA) using the same amount of thrust--very wasteful. > Also (minor gripe): I wish the Hummer would continue to give me info when >I request it rather than 'SITUATION UNCHANGED'. A lot of time I have my >hands full with something or other when the info comes in, and I need to >have it repeated. Unfortunately, I just get the 'unchanged' message. You can only get new data every so often, so don't bug the folks in the Hawkeye unless you really need to.
