The Phoenix just won't >hack it against fighters, especially not if they know you are there. While I'll agree that having AMRAAMs would be nice :-) the 54 is no slouch either. Migs and Sukhois are easy prey near rmin so long as your aspect ratio puts you at his 6 or 12 o'clock. The closer you are to his 3 or 9 o'clock, the greater the chance he'll have at evading. AMRAAMS would let you break off after launch but in a sim, it would probably be just as easily fooled under the conditions I mentioned above. >Sparrows are of no use against a MIG29 or SU27 with AA-10c or AA-12 active >radar missiles. You lock them and fire a Sparrow. They react by firing an >AA-10C or AA-12 and are free to manouver. I have to keep the lock on them >to guide the sparrow. Which means BOOM, I get speared. So I have no choice >than to start manouvering to defeat the missiles fired at me. You can play chicken with him for sure. If you launched first, there's always the chance that your AIM-7 will get there first and still have time to evade. Decisions decisions :-^) > This I >usually manage but I break lock and my Sparrow goes ballistic. The MIG's >(clever bastards) know this and use the time I need to defeat the missiles >to close in (all the time firing active radar missiles) and finally finish >me off with an AA-11. Use your wingman here. Set him lose on the guy you have locked up. If he persists with you, your wingie get's a free lunch. If he breaks off to deal with the new threat, you're free to go on the offensive. >In my opinion this is caused by the lack of a medium >ranged active radar missile like the AMRAAM. I don't think the Kutznetsov can haul a third of the Su-27's necessary to cause a concern :-)) >Stuart, do you know if the US Navy has any plans in that direction? I haven't heard of any plans to do this in the near future. I found an SU-25 sim, 'Stormovik', by Rick Tiberi, released by Electronic Arts for eight dollars and change. I wasn't expecting much, but, in the past I've found some real sweet deals in bargin bins, such as Domarks MiG-29 for Eleven dollars some months back. After my first flight I knew I had a winner. The flight modeling may have taken a few liberties, no rudder, no red/blackout, for example, but I am _very_ pleased. The setting is Germany, the scenario is fighting 'rebels' or 'terrorists' who have armed themselves with stolen Russian weapons and American weapons, perhaps purchased on the open market, or stolen from US Air bases. Missions are almost exclusively air-to-ground (as they SHOULD be for the SU-25). The terrain is semi-flat-land. It appears they started with a flat world, and added gobs of forests (3D polygons), hills, karsts, lakes, cities, and small mountains. No valleys. This is the first time I've seen landscaping done this way, and, while it's not a true 3D landscape, it's pleasing to the eye. Weapons include retarded bombs, napalm (!), unguided 57mm rockets, AS-7's, AA-2 and AA-8's, and an internal 30mm chain gun, complete with 2400 rounds. You've also got 256 chaff and 256 flares. The manual states that this is accurate to the real SU-25. There are perhaps thirty missions, over the course of three years. Rank Has It's Privleges. At higher ranks you get better weapons, but, of course, you also take more risks! Bombing is totally intuitive. There are no aids. There is, however, a targetting system which you can use to 'box' approaching targets on your HUD. I'm not sure how realistic this is, and use it only when firing AA or guided AS-7's. A note on the AS-7 -- After you fire, you must keep the target 'locked' or the missile will lose guidance. The instrumentation is very metric. Meters for altitude, KPH for airspeed. I read that 2 KPH is _approximately_ 1 knot. Is this true? Stuart? There are a number of cute visuals, for example, occasionally when you* get hit blood will splatter the canopy. If you can find a copy at a good price, I highly recommend investing a small amount of cash. Re; FST sharing. This is very welcome news. I've been wanting to pick this up for ages, but I haven't had a spare seventy bucks lately. I'm looking forward to seeing your sim, Joerg. Would you also write up a monograph on how easy/intuitive you found the program to use? With regards to landscaping, how much control do you have? Can you 'dig' valleys, 'grow' mountains, 'pour' rivers and lakes? What aircraft are you modeling, BTW? Jay ------------------------------- [[ End of digest Volume 2 : Issue 25 ]]
