Why? Simply put, they are reviewing WAD's as stand alone games-- this was NOT the intent of most deathmatch WAD's! Thus, this list was born: relative to deathmatch conceivability only. Meaning that story, graphics, music, secrets, and cute tricks take back-seat to the WAD's ability to host multi-player carnage. *************************************************************** * This list is sorted by Game Play, Design, and then Name. * * - Deathmatch Episodes follow individual map listing. * * - Full legend and credits follow this list. * *************************************************************** =========================================================================== G = Game Play T = Type (Action/Hunting/Both) D = Design W = Weapons at skill 1 (0-4) # = Recommended Minimum # Players M = Monsters at skill 1 (0-5) G D Name Map Released #T WM Short Description and Comments - - -------- ---- -------- -- -- ---------------------------------------- + 9 markroom E1M1 4-15-94 2A 30 Dark arena w/steps -x + 7 ledges E1M1 4-20-94 2A 34 Tunnels around a main room +D2 + 6 shadows E1M1 4-11-94 2A 40 2 small rooms connected w/halls -X + 5 house E1M1 5-28-94 2A 40 Simple house design, no furniture -X 9 7 butt E1M1 6-17-94 3B 44 Wood arena, shadow snipers +SM -X 9 7 ihrke2 E1M1 7-22-94 2A 34 Pit w/ledges and crusher -x (dmihrke2.zip) 9 7 ledges3 E1M1 6-07-94 2A 34 2 rooms w/ledges, stairs, & elevators 9 7 peace E1M1 5-18-94 2B 40 Based on Shadows 9 6 cor81 E1M1 5-31-94 4A 40 Corridors w/side rooms. We have only taken the time to review WAD's in which the authors have expressly designed for deathmatch play or we were asked to rate it as such. No effort was made to review WAD's based on original id levels as id has expressed they did NOT want people to modify their levels. It should be noted that Episode 1, Map 1 and Map 5 of the shareware DOOM are also fine places for deathmatches. If you don't know how to setup a deathmatch between two or more computers running DOOM-- we suggest you read Section 8 of the "Offical" DOOM FAQ. The FAQ is available at infant2 or by sending email to Hank Leukart at: hleukart@shell.portal.com or ap641@cleveland.freenet.edu with a message subject of "DOOM FAQ Request". If you have written or know of a deathmatch arena that isn't on the list, or just a map good for deathmatching, let us know, and well add it. DISCLAIMER: ----------- A low rating (on our scale) doesn't imply a bad or unplayable WAD-- just that it's not a fun deathmatch WAD. Due to the limited time we can devote to each WAD and the fact that most of our play-testers are partial to action based WADs, this list may be slightly skewed in that direction. All WAD's were tested on skill level 1, with 2 or 4 players in DOOM 1.2. We're not infallible. Some of the above ratings came from second hand sources. If you feel a WAD has been rated too harshly or highly, let us know, and we'll re-evaluate it. We'll just give some basic tips that we've found the majority of players to prefer: - Keep the map relatively small. A map that is too large is both slow on many machines and very hard to find frag-meat. If you can't get a frag at least every 3-5 minutes, you're map is too big. - Keep Deathmatch II rules in mind! - Suicides count against your frag count - Ammo, Health, and Armor respawn. Avoid using supercharges and mega-armor, unless they are strategically placed (it is risky to get it). Avoid TONs of ammo around the arena. Avoid treasure rooms with tons of ammo, health and armor, this allows a player to hole up, and may make it too difficult to take him out. - Avoid placing too many or too powerful monsters. Monsters can be turned off-- so you should include some, but a CyberDemon does NOT make a good deathmatch. Too many monsters also slows the game down on slower machines. Once nice trick we've seen is in a couple of WAD's is to put monsters in a cage. - Keep respawning monsters in mind! Place only a few monsters at the lower difficulties. With respawn, this can supply a continual supply of monsters through out the deathmatch. If it's worth having a few monsters in the beginning, it may be worth having them throughout. - The BFG should only have one or two shots or not be placed in the game at all. A good deathmatch can be ruined by an overloaded BFG. - Many of the better deathmatch WADs contain sniper zones, shaded areas (not too much darkness), and good weapons placed in spots easy to target anyone running after it. - Consider whether to include suicide traps or ooze. These can become unfair as people kill themselves to restock on ammo. However, if you are designing a Deathmatch 2 arena, this is not an issue, and traps can enhance gameplay (Suicides decrease your frag count, and respawning ammo is available!). - Making cooperative exits are a mixed blessing. Maps with coop-exits require the cooperation of at least 2 players to exit the level. This keeps a single player from exiting the level early. The downside of this is that it generally puts one player at risk. I (CJ) also find any degree of cooperation distasteful when I'm in a chainsaw frenzy :). - Take care with triggers that work fine in single player, but in multiplayer, allow one player to become trapped by another's actions. An example of this are triggers that stop moving floors. Any "once-only" type triggers are also suspect. - Avoid being sloppy. Correct any HOM (believe it or not people still use version 1.2) or missing textures. Make sure to include a marked exit. Beta test your map (let others do so) before releasing it. Anything worth doing is worth doing well. - It has been found that starting the players in areas that are large or full of many vertices will cause DOOM to lockup a network game at startup on anything less then a 486/66. Be kind, make the players face the wall at start or put them in small starting rooms. The people at id have stated that they are working on this, but understand that the problem is still evident with Doom version 1.5b. Also, while talking about starting locations- be fair and place them in out of the way places or even up on a ledge that can't be gotten to. It's not much fun being fragged over and over right after coming back to life. -ALTDEATH WAD DESIGN TIPS: From: Joe Gayda (joeg@meaddata.com) -------------------------- - One Medkit in a room is a powerful item. - Inviso and Invulnerability DON'T regenerate. - Soul Spheres, Bezerk Boxes, and Mega Armor still regenerate. - The "sticky" deathmatch weapons can be picked up multiple times by the same player after they regenerate. That is almost enough extra ammo without adding extra ammo boxes which are going to regenerate also. - Avoid rooms that allow people to "Hole Up", unless there are more than one or you are intentionally trying to create such an affect. (It can be fun, but tends to get old.) - Try to work the right amount of monsters into the wad, specifically designed for use with the respawn feature. (Not to many monsters, just enough to irritate. =) ABOUT THE AUTHORS: ------------------ A lot of work has gone into this listing but since there are new WAD's released daily, we'll try to release updated versions of this at least once a month (probably more). We welcome any comments, corrections, and especially any ratings YOU want to submit. Send them to _BOTH_ authors. James Dicke jdicke@carroll1.cc.edu or EXEC-PC: JAMES DICKE - DOOM Fanatic.
